Substitutionary obedience is another synthetic imposter for true biblical obedience. Our flesh is very subtle and slippery. It will battle to stay free from any self-denial or cross-carrying. One of the ways the flesh tries to escape is by offering God something other than what He has asked or offering Him the very thing He has not asked for.
The fallen heart of man displayed this sentiment early. Cain tried to offer God the fruit of the ground instead of the blood of a lamb. His flesh wanted to substitute his own form of obedience to God. Of course, his offering was rejected, and God warned him that sin was lying in wait to rule over him. The answer was simple: If you do well, will you not be accepted? God asked for simple obedience. Cain needed to do what God had clearly told him to do.
King Saul made the same mistake. God commanded the total destruction of the Amalekites and their possessions. Instead, King Saul kept their king alive and all the best of their possessions. Then, he tried to offer back to God in sacrifice the very thing that God had commanded him to destroy! Here was substitutionary obedience at its very boldest and most blatant. What was God’s response? Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.
How often do we make the same mistake? We offer God prayer when He is asking for obedience. We offer God more money for the offering when He is asking for our time. We try to do more ministry when obedience to God would look like stepping out of the ministry altogether. We try to offer a more sanctified life instead of walking in the light and confessing the darkness we have lived in. We repent of a bit of sin but hide the rest. We offer God our service in public but ignore what He commands us to do at home. The examples are legion.
We cannot give God what He doesn’t want instead of what He does want. When the Holy Spirit shines illuminating light on our substitutionary obedience, we must quickly confess and repent. Substitutionary obedience is not biblical obedience. God can never accept or bless it as such. It is a synthetic imposter that will keep us from experiencing the promised blessings of true biblical obedience. Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice.
