And I have declared to them Your name, and will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.
John 17:26
Heaven will be eternally new because of the infinite love of God. Henry Drummond proposed that eternity, if it were heaven rather than hell, would have to be set in an eternal love. If we were only to be loved partially, if the love we could experience could be tainted, distant, or diminished, we would not have heaven. So where can we find a pure, unchanging, and eternal love? Only in God! The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying, ‘Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you” (Jeremiah 31:3).
For all of eternity, our Heavenly Father will be revealing His eternal love to us, and as He first loves us, so we will fall in love with Him over and over again. Sadly, in this life, sin hinders our experience of God’s love toward us. Satan seeks to deceive our thoughts of God’s love. The world seeks to tempt us to move outside of the sphere of God’s love. And the weakness of our flesh limits the harmony and expression of our love to Him. We can grow in our knowledge of His love here, but there will always be a battle.
That is why God cannot wait for the day that nothing in us, around us, or in the world we live in will hinder His love—in fact, everything and everyone in the new heavens and earth will be another reminder of His love! It is hard to imagine that God would take joy in loving us or making us His own through the good pleasure of His will, but that is the truth. The love of God will make life eternally new because we will never fully comprehend the full dimensions of His love for us.
The only One who could possibly even know such an incredible love is in the heart of God is His Eternal Son, Jesus Christ. He proves the Father’s love with His own. Listen to His words: As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love (John 15:9).
Do we think of marriage here as boring? So how then can we imagine eternity as boring? Our current institution of marriage will no longer be needed when the Eternal God brings us into the fullness of His eternal covenant. God will love us with all He is for all of eternity, just as any faithful spouse loves their husband or wife with all they are in body, mind, heart, and spirit.
I also want to make the point that God’s love will be personalized. He won’t just love us all. He will love you. He will love me. His love will be unique yet without favoritism. His image in us is unique, His work through us is unique, His service for us, our rewards, glory, commendations, dwelling places, praises, etc., will all be unique. God will love me, and God will love you, for all of eternity. All of Him, Father, Son, and Spirit, for each of us. The eternal love of the Father, the eternal grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the eternal communion of the Holy Spirit will shower each new day for all of eternity.
