Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.
1 Timothy 5:22
The Scriptures routinely warn us not to join the evil deeds of others.
Paul warned the Ephesian believers not to be deceived into joining in the works of the sons of disobedience. He then exhorted them, saying: Therefore do not be partakers with them.
The apostle John warned believers not to help or give hospitality to those who did not abide in the doctrine of Christ. He warned them, saying: For he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.
Paul again warns Timothy to keep himself pure from other people’s sins. This spiritual principle is repeated throughout God’s Word, both by command and by example. The rebuke is clear to those who refuse to consider how their actions encourage or aid evil. The application should be drastically apparent for those who are giving themselves to the destructive systems of sexual sin in our current world.
The business of sexual sin is one of the greatest evils of our time. When we give ourselves, body, mind, or soul, to the trespasses and sins of our current sexualized culture, we are partaking in the spirit that now works in the sons of disobedience. We are partaking in the monstrous business of sexual exploitation and degradation that inflicts incredible harm and evil in our current world.
We partake in the evil and disgusting speech and filthy images that God must patiently endure every day.
We partake in the evil actions and desires that destroy the trust and intimacy of half of all marriages in America.
We partake in the evil lies of Satan that promise satisfaction but devastate the hearts of sons, daughters, and spouses as well as disintegrate marriages and families.
We partake in the evil, leering spirit that degrades women, encourages covetousness, self-love, and unaccountable living for personal pleasure. Sinful sexualization transforms humans from entities to quantities.
We partake in the evil business that keeps strip joints, prostitution, and innumerable internet porn sites alive and buzzing in nearly every arena imaginable.
We partake in the evil that supports physical and sexual abuse, forced marriages, as well as the literal sex-slavery of untold numbers of women and children all around the world.
We partake in the evil that stirs the desire for twisted and criminal and murderous exploitations the likes of which you and I can hardly imagine. Things so wicked that they should not even be spoken and cannot be forgotten by the law enforcement that works to stop them.
We partake in the evil that is sucking the purity, life, and vitality from the church, and possibly some of the people reading this very post.
We partake in the evil that Satan is using to draw the souls of men and women to hell.
Obviously, there is more evil sexuality in our world than I could ever describe. Still, the point is clear. Anyone who can lightly share in these sins, or could seek to justify their part in such a horrible system of evil, needs a healthy rebuke.
If you are currently in some form of sexual sin, or Satan has you on the edge of entering this morass of evil, then this exhortation is for you. God wants you to consider the responsibility your actions will bear in joining the evil expression of sexuality in our world. Doing so will help you endure temptation and live in a way that is pleasing to God. Listen to this warning if it is fitting and accept it as good and sound medicine for your souls. The sting of God’s lash is always healthy.
Paul warned the Ephesians: But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as it fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting but rather giving of thanks. For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolator, has any inheritance in the kingdom of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them (5:3-7).
